Where Are They Now? | Ryan Montgomery, 2012 PFT Scholarship Recipient
From Pendleton High School to running the world’s most competitive trails, Ryan Montgomery continues to go the distance — in every sense.
After graduating from PHS, Ryan earned his B.S. in Finance from Brigham Young University. He began his career in strategy consulting with Accenture in the San Francisco Bay Area, later transitioning into tech sales and partnership work after relocating to Park City, Utah.
Today, Ryan is pursuing his MBA at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and will graduate in June 2026. Following business school, he plans to move into commercial development or strategy within the running industry.
A sponsored professional ultrarunner since 2019, Ryan specializes in 100-mile mountain trail races. A former Pendleton High School cross-country runner, Ryan discovered he thrives in the longest distances, and has built an elite career around it. He was named a Top 10 North American Ultra Runner of the Year in 2023 and competes in national and international events. Highlights include Top 10 finishes at the Western States Endurance Run in 2023 and 2025, and a podium finish at the Leadville Trail 100 Run in 2024.
Ryan is also the founder of Out Trails, a nonprofit dedicated to building LGBTQ+ community in the trail and outdoor space. Through programming, consulting, and partnerships with major race organizations and brands, Out Trails is helping athletes feel seen, supported, and connected through movement and time outside.
Pendleton Foundation Trust is honored to have played a small part in Ryan’s journey, reminding us that when our community invests in its students, there’s no limit to where they can go.
